Research and Development is generally considered in the Design for Six Sigma which is applying the tools and techniques early on in a proactive basis to prevent the occurence of defects rather that seeking to eliminate the defects that were built into the system.
Just participated in a conference for the pharmacy and medical devices industry that focused heavily on the research and development areas for application of six sigma.

cadams- I have a very senior level position with a Medical
Device company. I was wondering if you could lead me to
anyone you may know or have met at the conference. I need
the person to be strong on the design side as you mentioned

Not sure I understand your request. Are you looking for someone to help you with implementing six sigma in medical devices as a consultant? If so,of course,I suggest us. If you are looking to hire someone who is strong in Medical and also is competent with Six Sigma that is going to be a difficult set of criteria to fill. Most of the people I met at the various conferences are all looking to hire Black Belts. My suggestion is to get someone who is good in the industry and has the leadership capability and then let us work with that person to get the six sigma competencies. We are doing a fair amount of one on one and small group development work with executives. We can teach the skills to any executive with the desire to learn.
