As you start to focus on the customer, it is likely that the processes involved cross the functional or division boundaries in your organization. Processes that cross departmental boundaries frequently have the biggest issues at the boundaries. Waste, scrap, rework, redundancy, inattention, passing the buck etc., are frequently found at the boundaries. 

Within the Departments or Functions internal bureaucracy frequently rules. Sub optimization to meet the Department goals without consideration for the impact on the ultimate customer or the overall organization is common.

It is this crossing of normal boundaries that will cause Blackbelts and their teams some of the largest challenges. Champions and Senior Management need to be constantly aware and supportive of improvement activities that are multi-department or multi-functional in nature. These projects also require the greatest amount of interpersonal skill and understanding by the Black Belt.
