As the number of defects decrease the amount of resources dedicated to prevention can be decreased and hence the prevention costs are reduced as the defect rate is reduced.

 
Processes that function properly are less expensive. The appraisal cost will also decrease as the defects continue to decrease as some sampling approaches can be used and the failure costs are driven to almost nonexistent levels.
